Keystone Species: The Woodland Caribou
There are a variety of different types of species in Gros Morne. One type of species is a keystone species. An example of a keystone species would be the woodland caribou.
They might not have that much impact on the environment, but if removed the whole
structure of the environment will be lost. Many key species, such as the wolverine, prey on this animal, so if gone, these predators will die off resulting in a chain reaction. Eventually, plants such as the newfoundland dwarf birch, which the woodland caribou would normally prey on, will overpopulate, leading to overcrowding and competition. Because of this, the ecosystem will become unbalanced, eventually the leading to the fallout of this environment.
